Air Quality Testing

MB’s Air Quality Testing consultants are capable of testing and monitoring environmental gases, toxic gases & VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Environmental gases such as Carbon Monoxide can be hazardous and Carbon Dioxide monitoring can be used to determine adequate ventilation.

Toxic or Combustible Gases such as Hydrogen Sulfide or Nitrogen Dioxide, are normally associated with sewer gas leaks.

VOCs are chemical pollutants that are usually the result of formaldehyde and other chemicals that are “off gassing” from manufactured materials such as paint, carpeting, flooring, furniture or other potential contaminates.  TVOC or Total VOC monitoring will help identify the source of the VOC.  Many people have a severe physical reaction to VOCs.  It has been recently discovered that a lot of imported products that are listed as LOW VOC (especially hardwood flooring made in China) is actually higher than the VOC levels found in standard products made in the USA.  There is no regulation of the VOC levels for these ratings and they often carry a much higher price tag.

Environmental temperature and humidity can help determine the causes moisture issues in a home or building.  We often employ the use of our FLIR Cameras to search for unknown moisture.  These thermo-imaging devices are extremely sensitive temperature sensing tools, down to one tenth of a degree.  The temperature gradients that it finds can be used to very quickly identify areas of previously undiscovered moisture.

ALLERGEN TESTING

Allergen testing can be used to determine if certain allergens are present, common allergens tested for include: dog & cat dander, cockroach, dust mites, rat and mouse. This testing can help identify the allergen causing symptoms and determine when the allergens are no longer present and confirm return to normal allergen levels.

Another type of testing related to pests is Histoplasma Capsulatum which is the fungi that causes Histoplasmosis is normally associated with bird or bat droppings. Testing can identify the presence of this fungi and it can also determine when the removal of such droppings is successful and confirm that the environment has returned to normal fungal ecology. Histoplasmosis is a very dangerous condition that can cause significant health issues.

Sewage Contamination testing is used to identify if pathogenic bacteria are present after a sewer overflow or Category 3 (grossly unsanitary) water damage. Health and Safety are a significant concern when sewage contamination may be present. The range of organisms present in sewage can cause discomfort, illness and disease. E. coli, Salmonella, Rotavirus, Hepatitis and other diseases are potential risks. Testing is recommended after any Category 3 water damage clean up, to confirm that these bacteria are no longer present.
